Hairdresser punched and bit woman during attack on night out

A drunk woman claimed she had no recollection of biting another woman's thumb in a Newport bar during an assault.

Laurice Weild, 25, attacked Ella Stimpson at The Courtyard in Cambrian Road in the early hours of December 12, 2019, after stepping on her victim's toe.

Ms Stimpson shouted out in pain and said "Get off my toe" which caused Weild to grab hold her hair and used both hands to pull her to the floor. While on the floor she punched Ms Stimpson to the head, with three blows making contact.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday heard the defendant then grabbed her victim's hand and bit hard down on her thumb.

Prosecutor Emma Harris said: "She continued to bite down with some pressure before eventually letting go.

"[Ms Stimpson's] thumb was bleeding and she asked a friend to arrange a taxi home to speak to her mother who was a doctor."

Outside the bar a friend pointed out Weild to Ms Stimpson who called the police to report her. The defendant was arrested but said she had no memory of assaulting someone.

Weild, of Penylan Court, Cwmbran, later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Ms Stimpson sought medical attention the following morning for her thumb which had suffered a fracture, a split nail, and a crushed nailbed.

In a victim personal statement Ms Stimpson said she suffers from anxiety which had been exacerbated by the assault. As a result of the injury to her thumb she said she has difficulty writing which has caused her issues with writing notes and completing exams at university.

Defence barrister Richard Ace said his client "drunk too much and committed a horrific act" but referred to her previous clean character and her job as a hairdresser as mitigation.

He said Weild was "horrified" by her behaviour and he also referred to the delay in the case coming to the court, which was no fault of the defendant.

Judge Neil Bidder QC sentenced Weild to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered her to carry out 200 hours unpaid work as well as pay compensation of £500 to the victim and court costs of £420.
