Haircare brand popular with Irish shoppers responds as product ingredient banned over infertility link

A premium haircare brand popular with women across Ireland has removed an ingredient from one of its products after it was banned over infertility links.

Olaplex's No.3 Hair Perfector, one of its best-selling products, will no longer contain lilial following an EU ban.

It comes after European Commission's consumer safety committee deemed that butylphenyl methylpropional, a fragrance compound also known as lilial, “cannot be considered as safe”.

The ingredient is 'reprotoxic' as it was found that it could have adverse effects on fertility as well as on the development of a foetus.

Olaplex's No.3 Hair Perfector is among the many products for sale across the beauty industry which until recently used the ingredient.

However, from March 1, products containing lilial have been banned from sale in Europe.

Olaplex has removed the ingredient from its hair mask and adds that products containing the compound have not been sold in the EU or UK since January.

The company said in a statement: "We removed the ingredient butylphenyl methylpropional (lilial) from manufacturing already so you'll still be able to purchase the product in the future."

"Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector is not being banned. Olaplex takes the health of our consumers and regulatory compliance seriously.

"While lilial was previously used as a fragrance in the Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector, it was never an active or functional ingredient" their PR team also added.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we proactively removed lilial from our No.3 Hair Perfector globally and have not sold products using this ingredient in the UK or EU since January of 2022."
