Hair stylist settles age-old debate as he shares the 'perfect' days for washing

How often should you wash your hair and when has been asked by people for generations as they try to push their hair for as long as possible without it looking greasy.

Some argue washing your hair every other day is the best while others can leave their locks for a week before it looks less than perfect. Dry shampoo also plays into this, with people swearing by certain brands and having a strict haircare routine.

Using his YouTube channel to settle this debate, one hairstylist known as TheSalonGuy decided to give his opinion on how often you should wash your hair to keep it healthy.

He said: "There's loads of people on the internet saying, 'Wash your hair every week,' 'Wash it every two weeks,' or 'Wash it once a year,' - there are all these crazy, crazy things.

"In my honest opinion, as a hair stylist for many, many years, wash your hair as needed."

While this advice remains subjective, TheSalonGuy did add a suggestion for which days you should wash, as he added: "In my opinion, washing your hair two or three times a week - maybe Monday, Wednesday and Friday - are absolutely perfect."

This could actually help your hair grow faster too as it keeps your scalp moisturised with natural oils without allowing a build up of dirt and skin cells, which could cause the skin to become irritated.

Washing your hair too often can strip these oils out, resulting in dandruff or dryness - if your scalp becomes dry then try switching to a moisturising shampoo or cutting down how often you wash it.

Usually, two days is the perfect compromise, however for those who do a lot of physical activity on the daily, TheSalonGuy said they should "wash their hair as often as possible" as "it's not going to do any damage or be the end of the world."

It should also be noted that this three day routine might not work for all hair types. It can be more difficult to retain moisture in afro hair due to the way oils travel down each strand, for example, and over-washing can result in scalp irritation.

According to Afrocks, "sebum takes a longer time to travel down afro hair, therefore, you need to incorporate oils in your afro hair care routine to lubricate, protect, and seal in the moisture."

For people of colour, Gal-dem suggested: "Everyone should be washing their hair at least once every seven to 10 days regardless of the style it is in."

Finding products designed for your hair, such as hair oil or curl friendly shampoos, is the best way to make sure you're treating it with care.

Depending on your hair type, some people also use a conditioner after shampooing when cleaning their hair, to make tresses soft and smooth. Others will skip conditioner, or use it in a three in one bottle, which can worsen any hair issues according to the stylist.

TheSalonGuy said: "That could be a serious issue because you need a product that's going to soften your hair and that's what conditioner does."

Too much conditioner can weigh your hair down and cause it to look greasy, especially if your hair is thin. In this case a conditioner for fine hair or oil while drying can help give it back its bounce.

Take all the advice with a pinch of salt as TheSalonGuy himself said, you should "wash your hair as needed" rather than sticking to a strict schedule.
