Hair salons opening for '18-hour days' to cope with demand as Covid rules ease

Hairdressers are reportedly planning to stay open for 18 hour days as they battle the huge demand when they are allowed to welcome back customers from April 12.

Whether a trip to the barbers or a stylish salon, people are desperate to have their hair cut after waiting patiently during the Covid lockdown.

Now finally with an end in sight, hairdressers are rapidly getting fully booked up.

From Monday, the UK is easing its virus restrictions which means that pubs and shops can reopen, as well as hairdressers.

It will be three months since people could last get a professional cut.

Joanna Hansford, who owns an exclusive Mayfair salon with her mum Jo, said they will be open from 5am to 10.30pm next week and aim to have 2,000 customers during April.

“We’re very excited, it’s been a long lockdown and it has been a lot tougher,” she told The Sun.

“The closure of salons has a huge impact on people not being able to look after themselves, especially when you’re looking in the mirror a lot more than usual. The reopening will make a big difference.”

Keith Conniford, chief executive of the Hair and Barber Council, which has 12,000 members, said: "The industry is extending opening times, a lot of them are opening seven days a week, and the staff are being staggered and shifted for social distancing.

"The longest hours I've heard of is opening at 6am, and staying open until 10pm. Customers are desperate to get back in."

Stores will also look to cater for the extra demand this week with Primark, for example, opening for two hours longer per day.

News that pubs can also open up for outdoor drinking will have whetted the appetite for many Brits.

Around 15,000 pubs, 40 percent of the total in England, are expected to reopen for outside drinking in beer gardens.

The government was forced to back down last month and allow stalls and marquees without planning permission while pavements will also be allowed for drinking.

Some bars with 24-hour licenses will be looking to get underway straight from the strike of 12 midnight on Sunday.
