Hair for Heroes: Hershesons launches nationwide campaign to give NHS nurses free haircuts

Lockdown has left us all in need of a good haircut, and thanks to a new campaign from London salon chain Hershesons, NHS nurses will be able to get their lockdown locks seen to for free.

#Hair4Heroes is a new nationwide campaign that kicks off this week, asking participating salons to pledge one hour of every stylist’s time per week to give NHS nurses a free cut and blow dry as a heartfelt thank you for their work during their pandemic.

For Luke Hersheson, who came up with the idea for the initiative, it’s about “giving something back.”

“I’d seen a lot of discounts for NHS staff after the last lockdown,” the salon owner tells the Standard, “but I felt we needed to do something more significant. We wanted to galvanise the industry nationwide to do something together. So that whether you’re a nurse in Glasgow or a nurse in Dublin or London, we can take care of you in the best way we know how – by giving you great hair and making you feel good.”

The offer is for NHS nurses only, and is restricted to a cut and blow dry to keep things simple. For Hersheson, who’s already speaking to over 100 salons about signing up, it’s “a way of thanking our NHS nurses for putting their lives on the line and celebrating everything the British hair industry has to offer in what we hope will be a new chapter for us all.

“There’s this intrinsic link between looking good and feeling good,” he continues. “I think if there’s one thing we know really helps people is when you feel you look good it has a massive impact on your mental wellbeing.”

Each salon that signs up will then be asked to nominate three further salons to do the same via a dedicated Instagram account, in the hope that the campaign will spread to all four corners of the UK, giving nurses the chance to visit their local salon nationwide. Salons taking part will be able to download a digital campaign certificate acknowledging their participation – and post about their pledge on the @hair4heroes Instagram account as the campaign continues.

“We ‘re asking all salons to get on board and spread this campaign as far and wide as possible,” adds chairman and founder, Daniel Hersheson.

Salons keen to take part should check out the website here, and for the rest of us – why not spread the word when you pop in for your post-lockdown trim?
