Hair care in lockdown - Newcastle stylist shares her do and don't tips

We've all been disguising our wayward hair and trying to hide our roots during House Party sessions but now it seems it really is time to face the growing problem.

Just as the full effects of the closure of hairdressers are making themselves known in an increasingly disturbing display of unruly mop tops, and people are finally debating whether to go for that DIY trim of the fringe, a Newcastle stylist has stepped in to advise us on how to cope at this current stage of lockdown.

Sophie Gibson, a stylist at Newcastle and Teesside's salon group Hooker and Young which has branches at Gosforth, Jesmond, Ponteland and Wynyard, is sharing some tips and tricks.

And they include don't try a DIY dye and don't be too drastic. After all, your local hairdesser will be awaiting your business when all this is over.

Sophie said: “We’ve just about hit the point of lockdown where our hair is becoming unmanageable and I understand the temptation to take haircare into your own hands.

"But I want to encourage people to wait until they can see their stylist.”

Sophie, who is also a co-winner of last year's British Colourist of the Year title at the 2019 British Hairdressing Awards, said: "If you’re not a professional, dyeing your hair can be really tricky and it may prove costly to correct it when lockdown is over.

"There’s lots of great hair products and styling tricks that can keep you going in the meantime.” Here are her Do and Don't tips:

Do

Do experiment with different 'dos': try simple braids or a bun and you will find that 'changing-up' your style can disguise or hide your roots.

Do try touch-up root sprays too for temporary quick-fixes until hairdressers reopen.

Do treat your hair to some TLC and apply a moisture-rich hair masque, a couple of times a week to help to repair any damage from heat and colouring.

Don't

Don't use box dye on your hair, advises Sophie, even if you’re bored and want to experiment with a different colour. Instead think about exactly what you might want your sylist to do when you meet again.

Do use heated tools too often on your hair. You aren’t going out on the town after all so give your hair a rest and see how its condition improves.

Sophie said: “I want to reassure people that hairdressers are still here to help and there’ll be no judgement if you return to your hairdresser with a bit of a wonky fringe."
