Hailstones bigger than eggs fall in Australia

Sydney has been battered by hailstones the size of golf balls, big enough to cause damage to vehicles.

The country’s Bureau of Meteorology said that 5-centimetre hailstones had been reported in one Sydney suburb on Thursday.

According to Sydney Airport, the weather caused some flight delays.

Images and video posted to social media show the sheer size of some of the hailstones.

One video, the sound of the giant hailstones landing on a car can be heard.

Other vehicles can be seen stopped on the side of the road, waiting for the storm to end.

While an image posted to Twitter shows surfers using their boards to protect themselves from the stones.

The State Emergency Service urged people to stay indoors to avoid being hit by the hailstones. While motorists were advised to move their cars under cover.

There were multiple reports of damage to vehicles with Australia’s Insurance Council saying it was standing by to help customers affected by the hail storm.
