Haill Six Incorporated Trades of Kirkcudbright install woman to senior position for first time in history

History was created when the Haill Six Incorporated Trades of Kirkcudbright held their annual general meeting in the town on Friday night.

For the first time since it was established almost six centuries ago, a woman was elected to a senior position in the organisation.

Lynda Meechan will now serve as Box Master while in other positions Ian D Swan was re-elected as Deacon Convener, Ian McIntyre was elected as General Clerk and Peter Smith as General Officer.

Deacon Convener Swan paid tribute to the long and meritorious service given by retiring General Clerk Sandy Henry and outgoing Box Master Derek Collins.

Welcoming Mrs Meechan to her new post Mr Swan said: “This is a historic moment in the history of the trades, founded in 1425.

“Mrs Meechan is the first female office bearer to be appointed in almost 600 years.”

In his closing remarks, the Deacon Convener expressed optimism that the Trades could get back to business after being in abeyance due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
