Hail the size of tennis balls pummel Germany

A massive hailstorm swept through Munich and other parts of Germany, injuring several people, including a 7-year-old boy, and causing damage to cars, buildings, storefronts and trees in an extreme weather event Monday.

Several media outlets in Germany, including The Local and BR24, reported the hailstones were as big as tennis balls, leaving shattered car windows, glass roofs and skylights in their wake.

Video captured by Verena Weis aboard a boat on Lake Ammersee and shared with EuroNews shows the hail hitting the water with a destructive force.

“Chunks of ice were hitting us like gunshots,” a Munich driver told DW.com

A tweet from Dietmar Bauer that says “Hail just in Finning District,” shows the size of some of the hail

Torrential rain and storms across Germany caused flooding and disruption during the public holiday of Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday, The Local reported.

Fallen trees on railroad tracks restricted travel, though some managed detours.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it before,” Roberto De Angelis told BR24.

The extent of injuries incurred by the hail was not available.
