Hail, heavy rain set to hit parts of Tasmania

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Tasmania's central and eastern districts, with large hailstones and heavy rainfall expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a broad trough of low pressure looked like developing into a severe storm this evening as it combined with warm temperatures and high humidity.

The warning applies to the east coast, central and south-eastern Tasmania.

The bureau said large hailstones and heavy rain were likely to fall around Oatlands, Swansea, Bicheno, Orford, Finagal and Bothwell.

Flash flooding in those areas was a possibility, the bureau warned.

This afternoon 1.5-centimetre hailstones were reported in Campbell Town.

The State Emergency Service advises people in affected areas to get their cars under cover, to seek shelter but never under trees, to avoid using phones and to be watchful for falling trees or powerlines.
