Cars damaged by Monday's hail storm and left in government owned car parks will not be fined for overstaying, Access Canberra says.
A severe hail storm swept through Canberra on Monday afternoon, damaging many cars and buildings and leading to a record call out for help from the ACT SES.
Police are reminding drivers it is illegal to drive a car with a cracked or shattered windscreen.
The government said a large number of damaged vehicles had been left in government-controlled car parks and roadside parking.
"If your car is undrivable and clearly damaged from the storm activity and therefore remains in the parking space, we can advise that you will not be fined," it said in a statement.
"We understand that due to the number of vehicles impacted by the weather event that removal of vehicles, such as getting them towed, may take some time and an understanding approach will be taken.
"We are aware that the National Capital Authority has made a similar commitment for vehicles that remain parked on national land."
The government advised people not to leave any valuables in these damaged vehicles, and said owners should contact their insurance companies to arrange the safe removal of the vehicles for repair.
