The Celtic and Rangers coronavirus transfer implications for out-of-contract players if season is extended

Scottish football is in lockdown with the outbreak of coronavirus and the news has brought an endless supply of questions to the table.

The SPFL hope to extend the season if it's at all possible which would see the possibility of football being played into the summer.

But the season being cut short is not out of the question.

Who wins the title and who is relegated has been the biggest talking point, but what about the players with contracts set to expire, including loan deals, on May 31 or June 30.

If extending the season does materialise, there will be a huge knock-on effect in this regard.

football.london reports that loan players may be given an option to sign extension waivers, while pre-contract agreements and transfers already agreed are still expected to be completed on July 1.

But there is nothing legally stopping players who are free agents to walk away from clubs.

A representative said: "From a straight contractual perspective, away from loans, if a player's contract expires on 30th June, I can't see anything being enforceable to make him stay beyond that.

"I can't see that anything could legally override players from saying 'I'm not staying beyond 30th June.' Or clubs from saying 'We don't want this guy after 30th June.'"

Former Liverpool and Spurs director of football Damien Comolli also provided his expert knowledge as to what could happen to players in this situation.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Legally, players' contracts end on June 30. So if the season has to go beyond June 30, we will have to do some special contracts or shorten contracts of a month or two months, which has never been before.

"There is no provision in the UEFA Players' Statute Regulation to do this. That is another aspect."

Players and teams across the world will be facing this very unusual situation and there are various Celtic and Rangers stars that could find themselves in this scenario.

Mohamed Elyounoussi's loan deal with Southampton is set to run out at the end of May and Fraser Forster's deal expires a month later, although Celtic are reportedly keen to orchestrate permanent transfers for the pair.

Neil Lennon does have an option to buy Mortiz Bauer who is on loan from Stoke, while the likes of Craig Gordon and Jonny Hayes are set to leave the club this summer, as it stands.

The big name for Rangers is Ianis Hagi. The Romanian playmaker's loan deal runs out on June 30, but the Light Blues do have an exclusive option to permanently sign the 21-year-old.

Florian Kamberi's and Sheyi Ojo's short-term deals expire on May 31, while Jon Flanagan, Andy Halliday and Wes Foderingham are all poised to be free agents.
