Haghill School in Glasgow's east end: Drone footage shows historic Dennistoun building's neglect

Drone footage shows the state of neglect a beautiful building has fallen into the east end of Glasgow.

An excellent video shot by Martin Monaghan shows the derelict Haghill School overgrown with vegetation after closing for good back in June 2004.

12 months ago, we reported on how the impressive B-listed landmark, located on Marwick Street in Dennistoun, had been 'left to rot' and placed on the Buildings at Risk register.

And last month, the building suffered a partial roof collapse, with Glasgow City Council quickly summoned to assess and make safe the damage.

Sharing the aerial footage on Facebook, Martin commented: "Haghill Primary School in Glasgow’s east end. Another neglected beautiful school left to rot.

"These old buildings are part of the history of Glasgow. They should be carefully preserved.

"Judging by its current state haghill school will be demolished soon. It’s very sad and an act of architectural vandalism!"

Between 1873 and 1918, Glasgow School Board built over 75 parish schools, each accommodating 800 to 1000 children.

Unlike other school boards, Glasgow recruited a range of architects to bring a variety of character to the three-storey utilitarian school buildings. Andrew Lindsay Miller was appointed to design Haghill, which opened in 1904.

Each of the classrooms of Haghill Primary School were designed to seat 60 children, with infants on the ground floor and boys and girls on the first and second floors.

The playground was also segregated into areas for boys and girls, each with their own toilets and shelters.

In summer 2018, an offer for £75,000 was submitted to City Property from a development firm which intended to transform the building into flats and create a new-build block in the playground. However, nothing has since come to fruition.

Martin's video has been viewed thousands of times and sparked nostalgia and debate among Glasgow's eastenders.

One resident said: "That is so sad, someone with the money and will could have preserved it and would have made amazing condos."

Another added: "It’s an eyesore. Who where you expecting to pay for its upkeep and for what reason and how long?".

While one Glaswegian commented: "My old school, such a shame it was left to get into this state, sad."
