Hafta letters: Sindoor, media and metabolic health, AI and jobs

Nishtha

Thank you, Raman sir, for introducing me to Andrew Huberman! As someone who has struggled with her metabolic health forever and was diagnosed with severe diabetes just last year (around the same time as your recommendation), his podcast channel has been an essential tool for me. Now my doctor says that if I continue being good, I may get off medicines in the next six months.

However, Godi Media puzzles me. What level of metabolic health is required to spew venom with so much aggression every night like Arnab Goswami does? I only watch his clips and get anxious – what is his cortisol level right now? What’s his blood pressure? That way,  Sudhir Chaudhary triggers less anxiety while spewing the same venom.

Jayashree’s hosting takes it up a couple of notches. Not having to deal with the Delhi lens on any Indian news, the elite humblebrag, shoving of Hindi and proud declarations of ignorance made episode 540 a great listen. I vote for Jayashree to be the permanent host going forward.

Hi NL team, I’m a longtime subscriber and a fan of your work and of The News Minute’s. I was curious about the nature of your partnership because the subscriptions are joint and the branding always includes both organisations, but the websites are separate with Newslaundry platforming their podcasts and some articles. Is there a plan to create one giant portal for all content? Apologies if this was already communicated.

Soumya

Hi NL team! An issue I would like to bring to your notice with a hope that you include this in your future Hafta discussions.

Recently, a friend of mine who is working in the software industry told me that many of these companies are planning to drastically reduce job offers to freshers coming out of the colleges. This is due to the fact that coding done by such employees can now be done using AI. Such a decision is really alarming as the software industry is perhaps one of the biggest employers in our country. The average age of Indians today is around 29 years and we plan to be a “Viksit Bharat” using our youth. But with AI replacing them, how are we  going to effectively use this demographic advantage? It would be great if you could get an expert on this topic and discuss how AI is going to affect not only the software industry but other professions as well. Also, what changes must be brought in our education system such that proper skills are imparted to increase employability in the future.

Hi team, the burqa/sindoor debate gets muddied when we use personal experiences to make a larger point. For example it shouldn’t matter that sindoor doesn’t hinder the wearers Manisha knows in her life. Neither does it matter if I tell you that in my family the burqa/hijab is not imposed. There is enough moral judgement in society for women who don’t use these markers to outweigh the limited empirical data we as individuals have. Wearing them is only ‘free choice’ when patriarchy/men unburden women of the weight of their opinion on the matter. This includes men who celebrate the burqa/hijaab/ sindoor out of cultural/social/religious pride or the men who enact laws like the hijab bans of France. Has to be a women-led debate and men's contribution has to be to condition the judgement out of our systems.

Hello team,

Hope you all are doing well. I just want to ask in the backdrop of the ANI-Mohak Mangal scene, how do you manage such situations? Or as news organisations, you have a subscription to ANI and PTI ?

Just a reminder – as Abhinandan said in another podcast that he would consider a deep-dive story on CBFC, I think you should cover it as nobody knows how it works.

Hello all, I am a new subscriber and finally bought the subscription as media reporting during Operation Sindoor was a wake-up call. It’s awful to see the state of our country and the media. I was a BJP supporter for many years but now feel ashamed seeing their antics and politics. Keep up the good work and wishing you all the best for your future endeavours.

Also, it’s awesome to see so many people from Dehradun. Love from a fellow Doonite.

We only read out letters from our subscribers since they’re the ones who power our work. You can too. Click here to subscribe.
