Hafta letters: India’s real issues, growth of middle class, lack of prep

Anonymous

Last week, for a few days the Delhi-NCR was engulfed once again by smoke.

In a few days, we will have rain in Delhi-NCR and roads would just collapse or get clogged (Bangalore already is going through that).

We’re looking at a serious job crisis in India with placements suffering.

A professor is arrested for a Facebook post.

A BJP MP called Sofiya Qureshi a sister of a terrorist, he roams free.

Amongst all of this, every day there’s something happening in Bangalore where people are being confronted if they don't know Kannada.

BJP is keeping up its division on the basis of religion. Rahul Gandhi wants to divide on the basis of caste and bring reservation.

Is there a party that’s willing to sell “jobs”, “cheap education”, “healthcare”, “a better life”? Are these things not in demand or something? These “issues” on which parties run – are they created by the people or the parties? Maybe that would answer a lot about why politicians do what they do in India.

Hi NL team, great work, keep it up.

I was genuinely disappointed by our so-called LOP. Rather than holding the government accountable with meaningful questions, he chose to level an absurd accusation of treason against the FM and also made a conclusion that we lost planes because of this. I mean, surely he can’t be this dumb.

I expected the Opposition to raise real security concerns like why are terrorists still able to cross the LoC? Catching them after they killed 26 innocent civilians is not good enough. What’s even more puzzling is that every time a terrorist is neutralised in the Valley, we’re told exactly when he crossed the border. If we know when, then why can’t we stop it?

Also, the false equivalence made in the last episode between sindoor and burkha was just laughable.

Hi Newslaundry team,

I’m writing this email after reading the horrible news targeting Newslaundry, especially the female journalists. It is deeply shameful, and I sincerely hope your team receives the justice you deserve. One wonders – where is the Women’s Commission now? And as for Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, his actions are a complete disgrace.

Every time I hear a female voice on Hafta, South Central, or Charcha, I find the discussion becomes more nuanced and thoughtful. Listening to these perspectives not only informs me – it makes me a better person, and a man more aware of the privilege I hold.

I do want to ask, why hasn't a criminal case been filed against this individual? Of course, I completely understand if you cannot comment as the matter is before the court.

Please let his lawyer know: sensible, calm citizens of India fund and stand with our Newslaundry team.

Jai Hind!

There is too much rambling and too little prep for the most part, for most Hafta episodes. It seems only Manisha and Jayashree come prepared, stay brief and on point, and are informed and disciplined with their questions. Abhinandan has too many off the cuff comments, many of them start with “I don’t recall if/was it was this or that” – why not look it up before you start recording? Raman and Shardool are often so unprepared and have so little to say when they’re prompted by Abhinandan that one wonders why we even need a panel of six (including a guest) when three to four well-prepared panelists will keep it tighter and more engaging.

As an example, The News Minute’s South Central, which has the same remit as Hafta, does a much better job at delivering weekly news, two or three rich discussions (with guests often), and staying focused and on point.

Hi team. I had sent an email regarding your new campaign against police brutality but somehow it didn’t go through. In areas where the conflict has been going on for years, like NE and J&K, how can you expect the people to come forward and complain when everything and everyone is a threat to national security?

I find Jayashree’s words to be the most sane in your discussions, after Abhinandan’s. Anand’s views, with full respect, sometimes feel a bit biased. Manisha is always high and goes to extremes, which is good, and which was recently witnessed when she was giving confusing justifications to Sindoor not being a symbol of patriarchy.

Don’t you think there should be a proper mechanism to set the salary of MPs and MLAs instead of giving them the power to manage their own salaries!

Been a long-time watcher and recent subscriber. As someone based in the US, this really helps me stay in touch with politics in India.

With the recent move towards authoritarianism in India, I’m curious about your take on this.

Does the rise of Modi, and the erosion of institutions represent democracy in our country? Democracy at the end of the day is a reflection of society, it was a western concept adapted to India – a society which majorly does not have values of intellectual curiosity, equality, secularism…

With the country’s middle class steadily growing, do you see this as an erosion of “elitist” voices and the evolution of the “true” voice of the country? One which does not hold the same values as we do? At the end of the day, is this a true reflection of what our society wants? Also curious on your take on technocracy (as we did in the past with intellectuals in power) vs democracy.

We only read letters from our subscribers since they are the ones who power our work. You can be one too. Click here to join the tribe.
