Hadleigh Parkes and Beauden Barrett face off as new lives begin in Japan

Former Wales centre Hadleigh Parkes faced off against Beauden Barrett on Saturday morning as the pair settle into life in Japan.

Parkes was playing in his third game for the Panasonic Wild Knights after joining from the Scarlets during the summer, while Barrett was making his first start for Suntory Sungoliath.

Both had relatively quiet games, though Parkes did have a hand in his side's one and only try of the match. He ran a trademark line off a maul in the opposition 22, cutting from out to in and running hard at the defence.

It set the target and just moments later his team-mate Ben Gunter was powering his way over.

Parkes produced a handful more carries and was solid in defence before being replaced in the 53rd minute of the match.

Barrett, meanwhile, was quiet for much of the game before he too was brought off just short of the hour mark.

Also involved in the game was Parkes' team-mate and former England international George Kruis, who was industrious in defence and ran the lineout, which was largely accurate.

With pre-season preparations now wrapped up, both teams head into their Top League campaigns, which kick off on January 16.

Sungoliath face Toyota Verblitz first up, with Parkes and the Wild Knights up against NEC Green Rockets.

Barrett is on a one-year deal with Sungoliath and is said to be earning in the region of £800,000, while Kruis is believed to be on £450,000.
