Haddington Place Edinburgh: Road sealed off after reports of gas canister triggers evacuation

Emergency services raced to Haddington Place last night amid reports of a gas canister in a building.

Police and fire crews descended on Leith at around 8pm yesterday evening (28 November).

The road, between Elm Row and Picardy Place Roundabout, was sealed off for around an hour.

Emergency services evacuated residents from their homes, as well as staff and customers in surrounding busisnesses.

Photos from the scene showed that police were joined by at least two fire appliances who were called out to attend the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that no-one was injured and the road reopened to traffic and pedestrians shortly after 9pm last night.

In a statement on Twitter last night, Police Scotland said: "Emergency services are currently evacuating a building in Elm Row, Edinburgh, as a precaution after reports of a gas canister being found.

"The road is closed between Elm Row and Picardy Place Roundabout. The community are thanked for their patience while the incident in ongoing."

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted from comment.
