Hackney shooting: Officers screamed 'Nick's been shot' in chaotic aftermath, eyewitness says

An eyewitness to the Hackney shooting has described the moment he saw Met police officers frantically respond to calls a colleague had been shot.

“There were undercovers all up the street, one of them screaming: ‘Nick’s been shot, Nick’s been shot’,” David Silvester told The Independent.

Mr Silvester, 28, who lives in a flat nearby the north London property where the shooting took place, said “right after” a “huge amount of police showed up.”

“The armed officers were running in one direction, and then the people who live round here were pointing in the opposite direction, where they actually are right now.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson refused to confirm the identity of the officer injured during a firearms raid by members of Specialist Firearms Command and Trident Area Crime Command, who tackle gang crime, on a property off Scriven Street, Haggerston.

It is understood his next of kin have been informed.

Kaner Korbay, who runs nearby dry cleaners Bree-Zee and has lived in the area for 21 years, said he had “never seen anything like this.”

“You do get some trouble round here sometimes,” he said. “It is quite frightening.”

The officer is now in a stable condition in hospital, the Met confirmed. A man, who has not been identified, was arrested on the scene.
