Hackney shooting eyewitness says 'I’ve been here 21 years and never seen anything like this'

Hackney residents have spoken of their fear after a police officer was shot in north London and said they had “never seen anything like this.”

A Metropolitan police officer was shot at around 12.45pm on Thursday during a firearms raid on a house off Scriven Street. A man has been detained at the scene.

Kaner Korbay, who runs nearby dry cleaners Bree-Zee, told The Independent although the shooting occurred as people fled from the raided property.

“Apparently an undercover police officer was chasing them and one of the guys running away turned around and shot him.”

Mr Korbay added: “I’ve been here 21 years and never seen anything like this. It is quite frightening.”

Kirit Shah, who runs Haggerston Pharmacy which abuts Scriven Road, told The Independent: “I just heard a shot and very soon there were lots of police everywhere.”

Staff and children at the nearby New Generation Nursery, Haggerston Street, were warned not to leave the building.

The officer’s condition has not been confirmed, but it is believed his injuries are not life threatening.

Details on the detained man have not been released.
