Luckily for London, a new one has just landed in the capital — and it’s completely free.
Hackney Revealed, a new illuminated arts festival, is coming to the city this holiday season to light up east London.
Running from November 15 to December 8, the festival will illuminate Hackney’s most iconic landmarks with giant light projections and art installations.
The event will showcase the work of a range of local artists and creatives for visitors to enjoy. About 250 Hackney locals have taken part in creating the festival with the help of 12 professional artists, through a series of workshops and get-togethers in Hackney last month.
Installations will light up landmarks including Hackney Church, the Tudor-era Sutton House, Hackney Town Hall and St Augustine’s Tower.
Colourful, moving projections will be beamed onto the exterior of the church to kick start the festival from November 15 to 16.
A paper wonderland featuring suspended origami lanterns and butterflies will also be located at the London College of Fashion on Mare Street from November 18.
The space will also feature a series of photographs that document and celebrate the people of Gillett Square, one of Hackney’s remaining working class neighbourhoods. Collaborating with young people and the local community, the installation creates a snapshot of the area using black and white photography, highlighting one of Hackney’s neighbourhoods as part of the fabric of east London.
Another highlight will see projections of Chinese lion dancers, carnival groups and circus performers shone through the windows of Hackney Town Hall between November 23 and 25.
A further 10 events have been announced for the three weeks, and there are more coming soon. There is not even any need to book, just show up and have a good time.
