Hackney Central fire: Dozens of firefighters called as static caravan engulfed in flames

Firefighters at the scene - (LFB)

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a huge fire on Cottrill Gardens in Hackney Central on Sunday.

The blaze engulfed a static caravan, two scrap cars and a 25-metre grass embankment running across a train line near Hackney Central station.

Footage shared on social media showed flames and smoke blowing around the train station, which was shut for several hours on Sunday evening.

The fire also impacted two mid terraced houses and a garage. There are no reports of any injuries following the incident, which was brought under control by around 9pm on Sunday night.

Brigades from Homerton, Leyton, and Whitechapel attended the scene and used a Drone Team to provide the Incident Commander with aerial views of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

While firefighters tackled the blaze, several London Underground lines were disrupted on the hottest day recorded in May for almost 80 years.

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who attended the scene, said: "Firefighters worked hard in hot weather to tackle this fire in Hackney.

"The fire affected a static caravan, two scrap cars and a 25 metre embankment along a train line, as well as three sheds and some fencing. The fire also caused a small amount of damage to two mid terraced houses and a garage. Nine people left two properties before the Brigade arrived. There are no reports of any injuries.

"As a precaution, power to the train line was isolated whilst firefighting was ongoing. The Brigade's Drone Team were deployed to the scene and provided the Incident Commander with an aerial view of the fire.

"Control Officers took over 20 calls to this incident and mobilised crews from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and surrounding fire stations to the scene."
