Hackney Carnival set to return for first time in five years

Hackney Carnival is set to return for the first time in five years.

Hackney Council has announced the event is going “back to its roots” on Sunday September 22, with a family-focused parade celebrating the borough’s diverse communities and creative talents.

The carnival was previously cancelled in 2022 as a mark of respect following the death of her late Majesty the Queen.

The occasion was also marked online in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Artistic director Pax Nindi will lead the street parade at the 2024 event, which will include eye-catching floats and Hackney’s legacy carnival groups “that residents know and love”.

Mr Nindi said he was “delighted to be at the helm once more” and that “2024 promises to be an explosion of colour, culture, and togetherness”.

He added: “Hackney Carnival is for everyone, transcending boundaries of colour, race, and creed, and I'm honoured to be leading the way working with our amazing Carnival groups.”

Hackney Council said work is underway to create a line-up for the day and to create opportunities for young people and their families to get involved in summer workshops across the borough.

Residents will be able to perform on stage, make costumes or volunteer on the day.

Mayor of Hackney Caroline Woodley said: “I’m so happy that we've been able to bring Hackney’s family-friendly Carnival back to the borough’s streets this September.

“The return of Carnival is a chance for residents to come together to celebrate and showcase the creativity and talent that makes our diverse borough so special.

“For anybody who has yet to experience Hackney Carnival, now is your chance.”
