Hackers suspected of global ransomware attack make $70m dark web demand

Hackers suspected of being behind a mass extortion attack that affected hundreds of companies worldwide want $70 million to restore the data they are holding ransom.

The demand was posted on a dark web blog used by the REvil cybercrime gang, a Russia-linked group counted among the world’s most prolific extortionists.

The attack saw the gang break into Kaseya, a Miami-based information technology firm, and used their access to breach some of its clients’ networks, which set off a chain reaction that quickly locked the computers of hundreds of firms worldwide.

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos has stepped down as head of the e-retailer, 27 years after founding the company.

The 57-year-old will be followed by new chief executive Andy Jassy as he spends more time focusing on his Blue Origin space exploration project.
