Haas awaits penalty from NRL investigation

Brisbane NRL prop Payne Haas has apologised to police for an incident that landed him in court. (AAP)

Payne Haas could be suspended for the start of the NRL season for the second time as he awaits the findings of an NRL integrity unit investigation.

The NSW Origin star was handed a two-year conditional release order in a Tweed Heads court on Thursday.

The 21-year-old is facing a fine and an NRL suspension when the integrity unit wraps up their investigation, while Brisbane have also flagged a club sanction.

It comes after Haas pleaded guilty to using offensive language and intimidating police on an alcohol-fuelled night out in Tweed Heads last month.

Should a suspension be handed down as expected, it will be the second time in three years Haas has missed the start of the season through an NRL ban.

In 2019 he served a four-match suspension for failing to cooperate with an NRL integrity unit probe.

Any matches served would be a big blow for the Broncos who are rebuilding after their worst season in history in 2020.

The boom prop is considered one of the club's best and most important players and has not yet been ruled out as a captaincy option under new coach Kevin Walters.

After his court appearance on Thursday in which no conviction was recorded, Haas apologised in a club statement released by the Broncos.

"I take full responsibility for what happened and I'm extremely sorry for my actions on that night," Haas said.

"I have gone to see the police officers involved and offered them a full apology for my conduct, as well as spending time with police going through what I did.

"I had been drinking and the words I used and the way I acted were totally unacceptable.

"I'd like to thank the police for taking the time to see me, and accepting my apology."
