H&M in Bristol city centre closes permanently

A clothing shop in Bristol city centre will not reopen when other non-essential retailers return after the second lockdown.

The branch of H&M in Union Street, next to the Odeon cinema, is boarded up and listed as 'permanently closed' on Google.

A sign in the window of the store reads "Thank you for shopping with us Bristol".

The Swedish retailer, which was founded in 1947, has other outlets at nearby shopping centre Cabot Circus and at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.

In August it was revealed Lidl had plans to build a new supermarket in place of the outgoing shop.

The company submitted a premises licence application to Bristol City Council which would allow it to sell alcohol between 7am and 11pm Monday to Friday, if granted.

Bristol Live has contacted Bristol City Council and Lidl to ask if the application was approved and is awaiting a response.

Lidl has more than 10 stores across Bristol, including one which recently opened in Longwell Green, but this would be its first in the city centre if plans go ahead.

H&M was located in Unit 1 of the building that lies on the corner of Union Street and Nelson Street, also home to the temporarily closed Odeon, for more than a decade.

A spokesperson for the brand said "the decision to close this particular store was part of the long-term strategy to ensure we are offering our customers the best possible shopping experience in the right locations".

The building was constructed on the site of the original Fry's chocolate factory, before the company moved to a new site in Keynsham in 1921.

After Fry's stopped production at its Union Street site, the factory buildings lay derelict for some years before being demolished and replaced by the cinema complex.

Unit 1 was previously home to a Mothercare before the arrival of H&M, and before that it was the original foyer of the cinema.
