High street fashion firm H&M said sales in September improved from the prior month, even as disruption and delays hit some products.

The Stockholm-headquartered retailer said sales this month were “slightly higher” in local currencies.

Growth came “even though demand was not able to be fully met because of disruption and delays in product flow”.

The firm’s boss Helena Helmersson told analysts and media bottlenecks affecting the chain were mainly in production, transport and ports, Reuters said.

H&M gave the update as it published third quarter to August 31 results that showed group sales in local currencies increased 14% from the same period last year. Online sales jumped 22% and gross profit was 19% higher.

It had to close stores temporarily during lockdowns. At the start of the quarter some 180 of its sites were shut, and around 100 remained closed at the end of the three months.

The H&M group has approximately 4,850 stores in 75 markets including franchise markets, in total.

Helmersson said: “As restrictions have been eased in many markets store sales have started to pick up again, all while online sales have continued to grow.”
