Gyorko's pinch-hit three-run homer gives Cardinals 6-3 win vs. Braves

ST. LOUIS _ Jedd Gyorko walked to the plate in the eighth inning Saturday night with one pinch-hit this season in 16 at-bats.

His second was much more memorable.

Gyorko hit a three-run home run against Atlanta reliever Dan Winkler to give the Cardinals to a 6-3 win over the Braves at Busch Stadium.

His first homer of the season was part of a four-run inning that included Paul Goldschmidt's line-drive single off of Winkler's back and a review of a close play at first base that went the Cardinals' way.

Andrew Miller (2-2) pitched one inning of relief for the win after Carlos Martinez allowed two doubles that put Atlanta ahead. Jordan Hicks pitched the ninth for his first save since April 29.

Goldschmidt had three singles, scored a run and drove in a run. Matt Carpenter also had three hits and drove in two runs, including one in the eighth to tie the game.

Dakota Hudson pitched 6 1/3 innings in a strong start that saw him allow two runs on five hits and largely keep the ball on the ground for the Cardinals' defense to make plays.

Goldschmidt led off the eighth by hitting a shot off of Winkler, who couldn't find the ball in time to make a play.

Paul DeJong then hit a grounder on which Goldschmidt was forced out. DeJong was called out at first but the Cardinals appealed and the call was reversed, opening the door for the rally.

Marcell Ozuna singled to right and Carpenter followed by slapping the ball into the spot at shortstop that was vacant with the Braves in a shift.

Gyorko then stepped to the plate and delivered the game winner.

The Braves collected three doubles in the seventh inning, including two against Martinez, and took a 3-2 lead.

Cardinals starter Dakota Hudson pitched a strong 6 1/3 innings but was relieved after he allowed a double by Nick Markakis to open the seventh inning and a fly out.

Martinez allowed a double by Tyler Flowers to score Markakis. Ozzie Albies followed with an RBI double to right-center field and could have reached third base when Harrison Bader mishandled the ball but slid into second base unaware of the bobble. He likely cost the Braves a run.

Hudson allowed two runs on five hits. The Braves scored their first run when Austin Riley's ground ball double over the third-base bag scored Josh Donaldson, who had singled.
