Gyms to reopen and sports to restart: Everything you need to know about new three-tier rules

Gyms, swimming pools and sporting venues will reopen from December 2, the government has confirmed.

Many people will be relieved to hear that indoor exercise, team sports and classes will be able to restart once again.

Gyms, leisure centres, playgrounds, riding centres, golf courses, sports courts and facilities and dance studios will all be allowed to operate in every tier, Boris Johnson confirmed on Monday.

However, the detail of the rules will vary across different areas, depending on which tier of the new, "tougher" three-tier system they've been placed in.

In Tier 3, for example, indoor sports classes and group activities won't be allowed.

The government is set to reveal which tier each region will be placed in on Thursday.

Here are all the rules for each tier:

In Tier 1:

  • organised outdoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes can continue

  • organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes can continue to take place, if the rule of 6 is followed. There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes, and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s, which can take place with larger groups mixing

In Tier 2:

  • organised outdoor sport, and physical activity and exercise classes can continue

  • organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes will only be permitted if it is possible for people to avoid mixing with people they do not live with (or share a support bubble with). There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s, which can take place with larger groups mixing

In Tier 3:

  • Leisure and sports facilities may continue to stay open, but group exercise classes (including fitness and dance) should not go ahead. Saunas and steam rooms should close
  • Organised outdoor sport, and physical activity and exercise classes can continue, however higher-risk contact activity should not take place

  • Organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes cannot take place indoors. There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s

Meanwhile, people in tiers 1 and 2 will be able to attend indoor and outdoor sporting events as spectators.

In Tier 2, sporting venues can operate at 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors, whichever is lower.

In Tier 1, the limit is either 50% capacity, or either 4,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors.
