Gyms could reopen in four weeks, following a review of the Tier 3 lockdown measures Liverpool has been placed under.
Yesterday Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new tiered lockdown system, with parts of England put under medium, high or very high measures.
The Liverpool City Region was the only area to be placed under the Tier 3 measures and as such faces the harshest measures.
Gyms and leisure centres will be forced to close from tomorrow (Wednesday, October 14) onwards, following spiralling cases in the region.
Today the region's leaders hosted a press conference and said the decision to close gyms was made at a national rather than local level.
Wirral Council leader councillor Williamson said: "This wasn't our choice.
"We're really disappointed at this - especially given the mental health benefits.
"We will work to get them opened again as soon as possible."
Councillor David Baines of St Helen's echoed the Wirral's leaders comments on gym closures.

He said gyms and leisure centre s provided key benefits for people's mental and physical health and said he would work to get an evidence base in favour of their reopening "as soon as possible".
He said: "Government have tabled the restrictions today in Parliament. They are their restrictions not ours.
"We are working to convince government to allow gyms to open again as soon as possible."

Mayor Joe Anderson said: "We made the points about gyms being safe to government- especially compared with other places.
"But the government weren't listening. They had made their decision to close gyms, betting shops, casinos."
All of the leaders pointed to the "sunset clause" where the measures are reviewed every four weeks.
They said that reopening gyms was something they would be fighting for within the first review, meaning if they were successful gyms could reopen in just four weeks time.
