Gyms and hairdressers may stay shut until April but exercise rules could be eased

Gyms and hairdressers may stay shut until April as Boris Johnson focuses on driving down coronavirus infection rates, reports say.

However, the Prime Minister is apparently keen to relax exercise rules as long as they apply to socially distanced sports.

Brits are currently only allowed to meet one person from another household once a day for an outdoors activity.

Tennis courts, golf courses and other outdoor sports venues were forced to shut in the latest lockdown, alongside gyms and swimming pools.

Mr Johnson has extended the shutdown until at least March 8, and scientists have warned pubs and restaurants may have to remain closed until May.

A government source told Mail Online the government's priority is to reopen schools.

"Schools will be first and everything else will have to take its place after that," they said.

"The only exception might be exercise. The PM keeps coming back to social contact – is there anything we could do to help a bit?

"Could we do a bit more on exercise to help with people's mental health? That is being looked at."

However, when asked if socially distanced outdoor sports - such as golf or tennis - could resume, the source said it was unlikely.

But government sources did say shops, gyms and hairdressers could potentially open in April, Mail Online reports.

An official 'road map' out of lockdown is due to be published in the week beginning February 22.
