Gyms and hairdressers flouting lockdown rules targeted in cops' covid crackdown

Gyms and hairdressers across Lanarkshire are being targeted by Police Scotland.

The area’s top officer has claimed the public are regularly flouting lockdown rules at both types of business.

Inspector Graem McLaughlin, from Bellshill Police Office, said he was particularly concerned with those gyms and salons that are remaining open or operating from home addresses.

He reminded business owners of the rules and “encouraged them to do the right thing.”

He also revealed that a number of premises had already been targeted and that fines have been issued and reports had been sent to the Crown Office.

He said: “Officers in Lanarkshire Division continue to explain the regulations & encourage people to do the right thing.

“They are responding to reports of members of the public breaking the restrictions & business premises particularly gyms & hairdressers, who are not exempt from the restrictions, remaining open or being operated from home addresses.

“Police Scotland take these matters seriously and will continue to do so.

“As a result, a number of persons have been fined or reported to COPFS in respect of the failure to adhere to restrictions.”

And he reiterated that the Chief Constable has made it clear that Police Scotland’s approach throughout the pandemic has not changed.

They said officers will continue to support people to follow the regulations and encourage them to take personal responsibility.

People should not leave their homes unless for essential purposes and the best way to stay safe is to stay at home.

Officers will continue to explain the regulations and to encourage people to do the right thing.

Where officers encounter wilful breaches they will act decisively to enforce the law.
