Gymgoers will not be required to wear face masks in gyms and fitness clubs

Those returning to the gym next weekend are not expected to have to wear face masks when they exercise.

Government guidelines state face coverings must be worn in 'enclosed public spaces'.

From Friday it will be compulsory for shoppers to wear them with demands already in place on public transport.

But many in gyms and fitness clubs, reopening for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown on Saturday, are expected be exempt.

Gyms are preparing to open their doors and are studying the strict instructions to protect members.

There could be looser demands on face coverings when using the centres.

UKactive, governing body for the industry, say masks are not obligatory.

They said: "We note the Government’s decision on face coverings on shops and public transport where it is harder to keep social distancing in place.

"However, we also support the Government’s consideration that there need to be practical requirements for each sector.

"As such, when it comes to gyms and leisure centres, the appropriate mitigation measures will be in place to make sure that social distancing remains.

"Therefore we would not expect face coverings to become mandatory in our facilities."

Other gyms have yet to announce measures but are expected to follow suit.

That won't stop extra measure being put in place to keep members safe.

Constant deep cleans and social distancing will be in operation with users kept apart on treadmills and other equiptment.
