Gym plan for popular town street

A new gym could open in an historic Ayr street if plans are approved.

Firm Sava Estates has applied for planning permission to change empty office space upstairs at 52 Newmarket Street into a gym and fitness studios.

A planning statement lodged with South Ayrshire Council said: “The proposed development will see the transformation of these vacant upper floor offices into a quality fully equipped gymnasium complete with a full size gymnasium on the first floor and a range of studios and private fitness suites on the upper floor.”

Designs submitted to the council show three studio areas, a reception area, male and female changing rooms and an open plan gym.

Opening hours would be 10am to 10pm seven days a week according to plans.

The planning statement from agent Bennett Developments and Consulting added: “This new gymnasium will help to animate the street by increasing pedestrian activity which in turn contributes to the sense of safety and security which increased activity can engender.

In turn this contributes to the general sense of well-being which is so vital in creating sense of place and fostering community spirit.”

“No decision has been taken on the application yet by South Ayrshire Council.
