Gym owners take on cycling challenge to raise money for community fridge

To mark the partial lifting of lockdown, local More Than Fitness gym owners, John  Young and Grant MacDonald, are taking part in a 24-hour indoor ASSAULT AIR bike cycle to raise money for the Ladywell Community Fridge Food Bank.

In an effort to raise enough food bank vouchers to provide emergency food to 500 local families, the pair will cycle 500 miles and burn a whopping 15,000 calories - each.

John and Grant will be “hitting the ASSAULT bike” for 24 hours at The More Than Fitness Unit in Craigshill at 9am on Friday – live on Facebook and Instagram.

They will be socially distanced, and joined by a DJ between 8pm and midnight to keep spirits up.

Ladywell Community Fridge last month alone, has been responsible for putting food on the table for over 500 families across West Lothian. Both John and Grant have a working class up bringing and know times can be tough without a pandemic to add to it.

John  said: “0ur objective is to help improve the health and well-being of our local community. It is such a difficult time for everyone but some families are having to cope without food or rely on food banks to help them survive.”

For both John and Grant life is about helping others and ensuring children are being fed especially at this unprecedented time. Over the past three months More Than Fitness has been doing as much as it can to help raise funds and supplies for the food bank, from running a food bank boot camp to hosting free online classes for companies in turn for a food bank donation.

Throwing down the gauntlet John said: “We want to achieve the outcome where no family across the West Lothian and Edinburgh have to suffer without food. We hope that other local gyms in West Lothian and beyond will take up the challenge to raise the funds needed to support community food banks, like the Community Fridge in Ladywell Baptist Church.”
