Gym owner fined for remaining open in defiance of national lockdown rules

A gym owner was fined for remaining open for business, defying restrictions put in place under the new national lockdown.

Police said they attended the gym in Widnes around 5.40pm yesterday to find three women working out and the owner in attendance.

Officers spoke with the owner who said they were aware of the rules that they should not be open under the new lockdown restrictions.

After "engaging and explaining the regulations," officers said they had no choice but to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) to the gym's owner and the three women using the facilities.

Cheshire Police have not named the gym involved or the amount of individual fines handed out.

A spokesperson for the force said: "A report was received that a gym was open for business in the Widnes area on Thursday, January 12.

"Officers attended at around 5.40pm and found three women working out.

"Police spoke with the owner who was in attendance. They said they were aware of the regulations and understood that the gym should not be open under the new lockdown restrictions.

"After engaging and explaining the regulations, officers had no choice but to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) to the owner of the gym and the three people using its facilities."

Cheshire Police added: "It’s a real shame that we have had to do this but the officers had no other choice in a bid to protect the NHS and save lives.

"We’d like to thank the majority of people for sticking to the rules and helping to reduce the spread of the virus."
