Gym goers try to flee as police turn up at illegal martial arts class

People attending an illegal martial arts class tried to flee when police officers arrived at the gym it was being held in.

Police entered the Ellesmere Port venue, during the practice at around 8pm on Wednesday.

Nine people were slapped with £200 penalties at the gym for breaking lockdown restrictions and breaching guidelines.

The owner of the gym wasn't fined as they didn't know the class had been held.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Cheshire Police posted on the Ellesmere Port Police Facebook page and said: "At around 8pm on Wednesday 18 November we attended a gym in the Ellesmere Port area and found several people taking part in close contact martial arts.

"Some attempted to leave once seeing us inside the facility.

"As a result of this blatant breach, nine £200 fixed penalty notices were issued to those in attendance.

"The gym owner was not issued with a fixed penalty notice as they did not know that the practice had been arranged.

"We don't want to stop you from enjoying yourselves but we must stick to the rules to help reduce the spread of the virus.
