Gym boss in 150mph BMW chase over Thelwall Viaduct lied and said car was stolen

A 47-year-old man led police on a high speed chase over the Thelwall Viaduct.

Lee Ablitt, who ran the Vulcan Gym in Newton-Le-Willows, was jailed for six months during a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.

Ablitt, of Dixon Avenue in Newton-le-Willows, had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

Gareth Bellis, prosecuting, told the court that at around 9.05pm on October 30 last year, police spotted a grey BMW under and overtaking near J20 on the M6.

The BMW, which belonged to Ablitt, reportedly reached more than 120mph as he travelled over the viaduct while being pursued by police.

Ablitt then joined the M62, when his speed reportedly reached around 150mph.

He later claimed the car had been stolen at the time of the incident and he was not the driver. But in a police interview he admitted it was him behind the wheel.

Ablitt, originally from the Warrington area, was also banned from driving for two years and must take an extended retest before he drives again. The court heard he had several previous convictions.
