Gylfi Sigurdsson admits he hasn't been at his best but believes he and Everton are now on the up

Gylfi Sigurdsson hopes that both he and Everton have turned a corner when it comes to form after the Blues record signing came in for criticism over his performances at the start of the season.

The 29-year-old was given a score of 8 in the ECHO player ratings for his display in the 3-2 win over Wolves with Adam Jones writing: “Fantastic delivery to set up Alex Iwobi for Everton's second goal and in general got himself much more involved than in recent weeks. He caused panic in the Wolves back line whenever picking up the ball, and that's what the Blues need from him.”

The assessment contrasted sharply with the 4 Sigurdsson received in Marco Silva's side's previous Premier League game, a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Jones declaring of him: “Struggled throughout the match to find the service he required through the middle as the majority of Everton's attacking play was focused down the flanks. When he did find possession, all too often the quality in the final third was lacking, and he was replaced on the hour mark.”

The former Swansea City midfielder was given a 5 in the 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace “Too quiet and lucky not to have been hooked earlier” plus a 6 in the 1-0 win at home to Watford “never really managed to get a foothold on the game as he might have wanted”, so he will now want to build on a more encouraging display.

Back in his native Iceland and speaking ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifier against Moldova in Reykjavik, Sigurdsson told Visir – via Sport Witness: “The loss against Aston Villa was very frustrating, but we are in sixth place, which is a good start.

“We have two decent games ahead that could put us in a good position.

“I wasn’t quite at my best in the first few games, but the last few games have been better.

“I’ve been better, and the team is better going forward. We’ve now scored seven goals in two games. We knew we were creating opportunities but weren’t sharp enough up front.”
