Gwyneth Paltrow says children can 'ruin' romantic relationships after Chris Martin split

Gwyneth Paltrow has said that having children can "ruin" romantic relationships.

The star opened up on her Goop podcast as she spoke to singer Katy Perry about having children.

However, she said that she felt "profoundly lonely" before having her first daughter Apple.

The 50-year-old shares 18-year-old Apple and son Moses, 16, with ex-husband Chris Martin.

Gwyneth admitted relationships are never the same after children saying: "It's hard on a relationship. Like I’ve looked back now on like the data set of parents with young kids. It just… ruins the relationship. It's really hard!"

Katy, 38, who has two-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with fiancé Orlando Bloom, agreed with Gwyneth but said both people in the relationship need to contribute as much as each other.

She explained: "I think if both people in the relationship are willing to do the work then it's going to be so much easier.

"But if one person thinks they don’t have any work to do then it’s going to be really challenging."

Despite this, Gwyneth said that before having her first child, daughter Apple, in 2004, she had felt "profoundly lonely".

She said: "I never felt lonely again after I had her [Apple]… and I had felt profoundly lonely in my life."

She then went on to date Brad Falchuk before going public with their relationship back in April 2015, and going on to tie the knot in September 2018.

She is now step mum to her husband's teenagers, Isabella, 18, and Brody, 16, who he shares with his ex, Suzanne Bukinik.

During her most recent interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show, the actress gave an insight into her pregnancy cravings before welcoming her now 18-year-old daughter, Apple.

She said: "I wanted apples, yogurt, Swiss cheese and Baskin-Robbins Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream. That's all I wanted. Apple is now 18 and I have a junior in high school."

She added: "I have to say I loved every single stage [of motherhood] and every stage I felt like 'oh I wish I could freeze time like I'm never going to love them more than this'. And then you just love them more."

Gwyneth went on to thank James for once giving her son Moses an 'Uber ride' home.

James explained: "We talked only about music."

"He got out of the car and me and Jules [James' wife] was like 'well he's the coolest person I think we have ever met'," James added.
