Gwyneth Paltrow's 'fail-proof' Xmas gifts – a £130 cup, £1k blanket and £950 tape measure

Gwyneth Paltrow never fails to disappoint with her ridiculously over-the-top idea of what makes a reasonable gift.

And this Christmas the A-lister has plenty of typically extravagant suggestions as to how best to splurge, sharing a roundup of her what she calls "The greatest last-minute gifts of all time".

On her unashamedly aspirational Goop lifestyle magazine, the Oscar-winner's team recommend their readers select only the very best for their nearest and dearest.

They write: "Lucky for you, we make it our job to do the thinking, scouring, crowdsourcing, organising, vetting, heavy lifting, and last-minute panicking for you."

While £130 ($180) may seem a bit much for a cup - surely you should get a whole tea set for that? - the Dior delicacy is relatively cheap compared to the astonishingly expensive £44,000 ($60,000) Hermes desk they suggest for the home worker.

Mine you, you will need to shell out an extra £50 ($70) if you want the matching red an white china saucer.

Then there is a cosy blanket - yours for £1,000 ($1,370) - made by Cartier of merino wool and cashmere and featuring the brand's signature panther.

Need a little something for dad's stocking? What about a sterling silver Tiffany & Co tape measure, yours for a cool £950 ($1,275).

For those still hunting for a little something for their treasured children, or godchildren, what about a classic wooden chess set. Goop recommends the Hermes version, of course, which can be a family heirloom for £1,709 ($2,325).

Not everything on her list is unaffordable however, with Goop suggesting one budget option - a virtual subscription to Broadway.

At £6 ($9) the option is remarkably affordable compared to actual tickets to the shuttered New York theatre scene.
