Gwyneth Paltrow discusses the colour of poop in latest eyebrow raising Goop update

Gwyneth Paltrow has lifted the lid on the toilet to discuss and dissect the different consistencies and colours of poop for her latest Goop update.

The 47-year-old actress and lifestyle guru wants to break down the taboo around poo and get people talking about their bowel movements.

On Friday the star shared an article on her Goop lifestyle website titled: “All Your Poop Questions, Answered” and gave information and advice on dealing with conditions including diarrhea and constipation.

The Hollywood star also picked out her favourite toilet related products that she is selling via her website; including de-bloat supplements costing $60 (£48.60).

Other products highlighted include constipation relief sachets costing $40 (£32.40) per box, a luxury bidet costing $649 (£525.60) and ‘The Essential Bathroom Footrest’ costing $220 (£178.15).

During a Q&A with gastroenterologist Dr. S. Radi Shamsi, Gwynnie discussed the importance of monitoring changing colours in faeces.

Asked ”What can affect the color of poop?", Dr Shamsi noted: “The most famous is red beets. Often, people think that they have blood in their stool, and then they’ll come in, and we’ll test their stool and find out that there’s no blood.”

He also advised: “Seaweed is a surprising new thing—people are eating a ton of seaweed snacks, which can cause fluorescent-green poop.”

Dr Shamsi warned Pepto-Bismol can lead to stools turning black, sticky and tarlike – but warned these are also symptoms of “upper gastrointestinal area bleeding.”

He warns if the discharge tarry and smelly, it could indicate a bleeding ulcer and recommends visiting a doctor.

He continued: “If you have pain in the upper right side of your abdomen, like a gallstone attack, and have pale, white, or manila-envelope-colored stool, this could mean that your bile ducts are plugged, and you should see a doctor.

“Grey stool is an indicator of a pancreatic issue. If your urine is dark and your stool is light, this could mean a pancreatic issue or a bile duct issue.

“Red stool can be indicative of a hemorrhoid, fissure, or deeper diseases in the gastrointestinal area, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, polyps in the colon, or cancers. Red stool needs to be investigated with a colonoscopy.”
