GWS ease back Davis, Taranto through VFL

GWS will ease back injured stars Tim Taranto and Phil Davis through the VFL as the AFL club faces a defensive selection dilemma.

Mark McVeigh will be looking to make it three wins from four starts since becoming interim coach when GWS host rivals the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night.

Davis, the Giants' celebrated veteran defender, has been out with a severe hamstring injury since round two, while midfielder Taranto is recovering from back issues.

But McVeigh will not be rushing the pair back even as the Giants seek to put a dent in the Bulldogs' finals aspirations.

"We want to get a lot of work into (Davis); he's done extremely well with our medical department to get to the position he's in," McVeigh told reporters.

"We know the VFL have a bye next week so he just needs to get some continuity under his belt...we just want to see him play a full game."

However, All-Australian defender Nick Haynes will slot straight back in after a battle with illness.

Haynes' inclusion and Davis' looming return create headaches for McVeigh after Harry Himmelberg's successful move to defence.

Himmelberg had a career-high 37 touches in last week's 49-point thumping of North Melbourne, and also managed to push forward for a goal.

"It makes it a difficult selection process for us and how we go about it," McVeigh said.

"We've got to take into account the opposition and what they can bring.

"Do we reset Harry Himmelberg forward? Do we play him somewhere else? So certainly we've got some things to discuss.

"The great thing about having a good, strong coaching group is there's different ideas that get thrown around."
