GWS could wield the axe for Demons clash

Changes are likely in the Greater Western Sydney line-up after their AFL loss to Fremantle. (AAP)

Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron will consider wielding the axe following his team's limp display in Sunday's 31-point AFL loss to Fremantle in Perth.

The Giants' finals hopes already look bleak after slipping to a 0-2 record.

But of even more concern was the nature of their defeat to Fremantle, with GWS losing the contested possession battle 145-113.

The Giants' sloppy skills and wayward goalkicking were also a massive concern, booting 1.9 (15) in the first half in perfect conditions at Optus Stadium.

Cameron said he simply had to look at personnel changes.

"You've got to make sure that you take a big deep breath and review hard, and review honestly and then not make silly decisions too early in the week," Cameron said.

"Let the dust settle, but no doubt there's going to be a lot of players that are under the pump. You can't serve up that sort of stuff, and we take full responsibility."

The Giants take on in-form Melbourne in Canberra on Sunday, and Cameron wants to see his side display more fight.

Cameron was bullish about his team's finals prospects heading into the season, and he wants to keep aiming high despite the flop against Fremantle.

The Giants are likely to be without Sam Reid for the match against Melbourne following the big man's high bump on Nat Fyfe that concussed the Fremantle skipper.

Jake Riccardi is a strong chance to return from an ankle injury, while fellow forward Jeremy Finlayson could earn a recall.

But former Docker Jesse Hogan (quad) still needs more time.

"It would be wrong for us to rush him in," Cameron said.

"He probably needs either a full week of training or a week playing at the lower level."
