Gwent Police officer suspended after alleged sexual assault

A Gwent Police officer has been suspended after an allegation of sexual assault.

The police force said there was an ongoing criminal investigation, being conducted by the force, into an allegation of sexual assault in the Cardiff area on Sunday, August 11.

In a statement, Gwent Police said: "A male officer of PC rank, who works in the Newport area, has been suspended and enquiries are ongoing."

A spokeswoman for the force said there was an ongoing internal investigation running alongside the criminal investigation, adding nobody has been arrested or charged.

In a separate incident, Gwent Police suspended two police officers earlier this month following allegations of a criminal offence and misconduct.

At the time, it was reported that the investigations - which are being managed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and being conducted by Avon and Somerset Police - were related to an incident at a retirement party for former Gwent Chief Constable Julian Williams, who retired at the end of June.
