Sir Vince Cable’s Liberal Democrats showed off a new recruit in the election battle today — the European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt.

The outspoken Belgian MEP joined the campaign trail in London for “our sister party” saying he was there to “campaign for a united Europe”.

Mr Verhofstadt starred in a BBC behind-the-scenes documentary about Brexit this week which revealed the incredulity and contempt voiced in private as Theresa May’s negotiating team became mired in difficulties.

It revealed that the Prime Minister’s top aide Olly Robbins joked about taking out Belgian citizenship.

Posting a picture on Twitter of his entourage on the Eurostar, he tweeted: “Looking forward to campaigning for a united Europe with our sister party the Lib Dems and Vince Cable.”

Sir Vince denied the Belgian’s presence was foreign interference and said they were campaigning to combat “ugly populism”.
