Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes not necessarily one for the purists

There is more news of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie, which Lost in Showbiz rechristened Nunchuk Holmes after seeing the first still from the Mockney fauxteur's set.

Now, though, it is the turn of Holmes himself, Robert Downey Jr, to expand upon the theme.

"It's pretty badass," he tells reporters of the Ritchie vision. "1891 Victorian England was a pretty gnarly place. Ours is a different Holmes, but still respectful to the character.

"I think as much as anything, the reinvention is actually a return to the idiosyncrasies that Conan Doyle had in his books that people hadn't really paid much attention to."

Yes … For the record, there is a single reference in the entire canon to Holmes's martial arts skills, in which Conan Doyle contrives to spell "bartitsu" as "baritsu".

Still - the diminutive Downey Jr giving us judo chops and growling "elementary, me old muckaaaah" whilst Jude Law as Dr Watson looks on … what's not to adore? Linger not too long in the edit suite, my dear Ritchie - we must see this work.
