Gutted Edinburgh locals back petition to save World of Football from demolition

By James Delaney

Thousands have backed a petition to save Edinburgh’s beloved World of Football centre from being bulldozed to make way for housing.

Controversial plans submitted to council chiefs call for the five-a-side and bowling complex to be levelled in favour of a mixed development of rental properties and student accommodation.

The facility - which has stood behind the Corn Exchange venue for more than 20 years - is used by a number of youth teams and community groups as well as passionate weekly five-a-side players.

London-based developers Watkin Jones plan to host an online consultation for the proposals, which have already been the target of vocal opposition.

Capital locals have now started a petition to voice their disapproval of the plans, with more than 2,500 signatories inscribing their names so far.

Local resident Bradley Gibb branded the centre a “lifeline” for local youngsters as he urged residents to get behind the bid to save it.

He added: “The World of Football along with the World of Bowling just off Newmarket road in Edinburgh, is set to be knocked down for student accommodation.

“We can't let big business keep taking down the life lines for our inner city youth to make way for yet more student accommodation.

“It's cited in the online articles that this will be good for the economy.

“In my opinion the local kids come before the economy. For a lot this could be their only place of peace and refuge.

“We saved Gorgie Farm, we can save the World of football.”
