Gusts of 44mph batter Merseyside as wind replaces sunny weather

After a spell of sunny weather, Liverpool has been battered with strong winds today.

Wednesday (May 20) saw temperatures reach a scorching 25C in Liverpool but the good weather is set to come to an end.

The city can expect the wind to stick around for the rest of the day, with the Met Office reporting expected gusts of up to 44mph.

It will remain bright with some sunny spells but the day will be scattered with blustery showers which will drift in from the west at times, and at times, could become heavy.

There will also be strong south-westerly winds.

It's expected to remain windy tonight with clear spells and some further scattered showers moving in from the west at points throughout the day.

Of the switch to cooler weather as we approach the weekend, deputy chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said : "Friday will be a cooler and more unsettled day for most as an Atlantic low pressure system moves to the northwest of the UK, replacing the warm air we've had for much of this week with fresher westerlies.

"This system will bring a spell of strong winds and a risk of gales to northern and western parts of the UK, with gales of 50 to 60mph possible for parts of north Wales, northwest England, Northern Ireland and western Scotland.

He added: "Along with strong winds, some rain is expected followed by showers, heaviest across north-western parts of the UK."

The weekend is expected to be windy with some sunny spells and light showers and temperatures will remain warm with highs of 19C predicted next week.
