Gus Poyet explains why Chelsea must make big Maurizio Sarri decision

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet insists that Maurizio Sarri must stay put beyond this season for the good of the club.

Sarri's debut season has enjoyed many highs and lows, with the Italian boss having to endure speculation about his position for several months.

Chelsea are battling for a top-four Premier League place and are in the semi-finals of the Europa League, while Sarri's men also made the final of the Carabao Cup.

But Sarri's style of play has come under-fire at different points during the campaign, with the Chelsea boss not helping himself in certain interviews where he seemed lost for words.

Poyet, however, wants Sarri to retain his role so the club can build something for the future.

"I would like stability and to keep the manager," Poyet told Sky Sports on Monday Night Football.

"Since Jose Mourinho won the Premier League every one expects them to win it every year now.

"It's very difficult to maintain a challenge for the Premier League when you change the manager every year.

"Sarri is very different to Conte. There is still something missing but he needs time. It's the only way they can improve."

Poyet added that this season has always been about qualifying for the Champions League next term.

"Going back to the Champions League (is the aim). This season is not about winning the Premier League. Man City and Liverpool are too good," Poyet added.
