Gurugram: Severe heatwave next week, mercury may touch 45 degrees Celsius

GURUGRAM: The city is again witnessing heatwave conditions after a brief respite with the maximum temperature recorded at 41.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, six notches above normal and a marginal decrease from 42.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

The city is likely to witness severe heatwave conditions from Sunday onwards, with the temperature expected to touch 45 degrees by next week. While warm winds continued to prevail on Thursday, the city witnessed thunderstorms in the evening, accompanied by dust-raising gusty winds at some places.

The minimum temperature was 25.5 degrees Celsius, eight notches above normal. It was 23.4 degrees Celsius the day before.

The city saw its first spell of heatwave from March 28 to 31, while the second spell was recorded between April 2 and 11. The ongoing spell, which started on April 13 is likely to continue till April 18 (Monday), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

IMD has already issued a heawave warning till Saturday. “There will be a rise in maximum temperatures by around 2-3 degrees in the next three days. Afterwards, there will be no large change in most parts of the state. Heatwave conditions are likely at isolated places till Saturday. Thereafter, it will intensify to severe heatwave conditions at a few places.

According to the IMD’s weekly forecast, there will be partly cloudy conditions on Friday, with the minimum and maximum temperatures likely to hover around 25 and 43 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Meanwhile, the city’s AQIremained in the ‘poor’ category on Thursday at 238.
